The Northern Lake Huron Pow Wow and Rendezvous is a celebration of the thousands of years that Indian cultures have lived along the shores of "the lake of the Hurons." The Pow Wow will begin with a cannon salute from the Armed Sloop Welcome, a reproduction of a tall ship built in 1774. Following the salute, several canoes of voyageur reenactors and Indian paddlers will arrive at Lakeside Park to participate in the Pow Wow.
The Pow Wow will feature Indian "drum teams" from the U.S. and the Canadian Province of Ontario, providing the cadence for groups of singers and dancers. The songs and the dances portray and honor various aspects of the Indian cultures. Among the singers will be the popular Woodland Singers from Petoskey who entertained during the 2008 Pow Wow at the Presque Isle County Historical Museum.
A Master of Ceremonies chosen by the Mackinac Bands will explain the significance of the various songs and dances and how they relate to the Indian cultures of the northern Lake Huron region. Several Indian storytellers will also participate in the Pow Wow, sharing the stories that preserve much of the history and many of the beliefs of the tribes.
An Indian arts and crafts exhibit will also held at Lakeside Park during the Pow Wow, and many of the items will be available for purchase. (Persons interesting in exhibiting should contact the museum.)
The museum's delicious "Buffalo Burgers" will also be available at Lakeside Park from 11 a.m. until 7, p.m., or until they run out of burger. Be sure to get yours before they're gone!
Admission to the Pow Wow is free. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
